Certification VLOG (GMO-free food production)

VLOG is a German quality scheme that guarantees that food products and animal feed are produced without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The system plays an important role in the German market and has been developed to provide consumers and buyers with assurance of GMO-free production. Kiwa provides independent VLOG certification in the Netherlands for poultry farms, livestock farms, feed producers, traders, packing stations and processing companies.

What is VLOG?

VLOG (Verband Lebensmittel ohne Gentechnik) is a certification system based on the German ‘Ohne Gentechnik’ legislation. Its purpose is to ensure that no GMOs are used anywhere in the supply chain and that no contamination occurs with GMO-containing products. A key principle within VLOG is the strict separation of GMO and non-GMO streams, combined with full traceability and control.

Purpose of VLOG certification

The VLOG system focuses on preventing genetic modification throughout the entire food chain. This includes, among other things:

  • No use of GMO raw materials in animal feed or production
  • Strict separation of GMO and non-GMO products
  • Control of risks of cross-contamination
  • Demonstrable traceability of raw materials and products

For participating companies, it is essential to prevent mixing and to ensure this is properly documented and controlled.

Chain approach within VLOG

VLOG operates a chain-wide approach. All links in the production chain must comply with VLOG requirements, including:

  • Feed producers
  • Primary agricultural producers (such as poultry and livestock farms)
  • Packing stations and trade
  • Processing industry
  • Distribution and retail

This integrated chain control ensures that products remain fully GMO-free.

VLOG requirements and control measures

Companies participating in VLOG must comply with strict requirements in the following areas:

  • Separation of GMO and non-GMO streams
  • Feed management and feed supply
  • Risk analysis of contamination
  • Cleaning procedures and process control
  • Administrative control and documentation
  • Analysis and monitoring of non-GMO status
  • Traceability within the supply chain

These measures must be demonstrably implemented and embedded within the business operations.

Certification by Kiwa

Kiwa conducts independent VLOG audits to assess whether your organisation complies with the applicable requirements. The audit consists of:

  • A site inspection of barns, production or storage facilities
  • Assessment of feed and product flows
  • Review of administrative processes and company description
  • Verification of risk analyses and test results

In addition to poultry farms, Kiwa also certifies packing stations, processors, traders and animal feed producers.

Combined audits and efficiency

Kiwa organizes audits as efficiently as possible. Where feasible, combined audits are carried out, assessing multiple quality schemes in a single visit. This reduces audit burden and increases efficiency within the supply chain. Common combinations include:

  • IKB
  • KAT
  • GMP+
  • SecureFeed
  • Better Life Label (BLk)
