Hydrogen is the future

Hydrogen readiness certification according to AR 214

Do you want to demonstrate that your gas distribution or installation materials are suitable for hydrogen? With certification according to AR 214, you can show that your products can be safely used for hydrogen blending in natural gas as well as for the full use of hydrogen gas. Kiwa developed the approval requirement AR 214 as an addition to the GASTEC QA quality mark. In doing so, Kiwa responds to the growing role of hydrogen in the energy transition and the need to make existing gas infrastructures suitable for new energy carriers.

What is AR 214?

AR 214 is an add-on approval requirement (AR) for the assessment of gas distribution and installation materials used with:

  • Natural gas blended with up to 20% hydrogen
  • 100% hydrogen gas

The approval requirement includes specific assessment criteria for components in gas networks, such as pressure regulators, shut off valves and valves. These components may behave differently when used with hydrogen, for example due to differences in molecule size, diffusion and material interaction. Certification according to AR 214 is always linked to an existing or simultaneously obtained GASTEC QA product certificate for natural gas.

Why certify for hydrogen?

The renewable energy transition is accelerating the use of hydrogen as one of the alternatives to fossil fuels. For manufacturers and network operators, this means that proven safety and reliability are essential. With AR 214 certification, you:

  • Demonstrate that your products are suitable for hydrogen applications
  • Increase confidence among network operators and end users
  • Prepare your product portfolio for future regulations
  • Maintain access to existing and new markets

Technical principles

The maximum operating pressure (MOP) and operating temperature are determined according to the requirements in the relevant GASTEC QA approval requirement for the specific product. AR 214 functions as an add-on specifically focused on hydrogen applications.

Who is it for?

This certification is relevant for:

  • Manufacturers of gas components
  • Network operators
  • Representatives and distributors
  • Retailers
  • Contractors and installers

Process steps

An approved quotation is the beginning of a tested and an approved product. You'll find the most important steps on the right. For more information you can contact our certification engineers.

    Initial product assessment

The assessment to determine if all requirements in the approval requirement are met.

    The result

The result is a certificate upon which is mentioned to which requirements the product complies.

    Product verification

The assessment performed after granting certification to determine that the certified products still comply with the requirements in the approval requirement.

    Control on quality system requirements

Control on following the IQC scheme (as described in the approval requirement) and the procedures.

Webinar

AR 214 was introduced in the summer of 2019. On Tuesday 25 June 2019, Kiwa’s Floris van Halem and Kees de Bree presented a webinar on this topic. The webinar explains the background of the approval requirement and discusses its key elements. Watch the webinar below.
