What is the RHP quality label?

The RHP quality label is managed by the Dutch RHP foundation (Stichting Regeling HandelsPotgronden) and is the leading quality mark for growing media in Europe. The label guarantees that potting soil and substrates comply with strict requirements in the areas of:

  • Product quality and composition
  • Safety and hygiene
  • Plant suitability and consistency
  • Control of harmful substances and contaminants
  • Traceability of raw materials

For growers and buyers, RHP therefore provides assurance of stable and predictable cultivation performance.

Importance of RHP certification

RHP plays an important role in professional horticulture and international plant production. The label is widely recognized by growers, suppliers and retailers. RHP-certified products provide assurance in terms of:

  • Uniform quality and reproducible results
  • Safe and clean growing media
  • Controlled origin of raw materials
  • Minimal risk of diseases, weeds and contamination

Chain approach within RHP

The RHP system covers the entire substrate supply chain, including:

  • Producers of potting soil and substrates
  • Suppliers of raw materials (such as peat, coconut and compost)
  • Mixing and processing companies
  • Distribution and trade

Through this chain-based approach, quality is structurally safeguarded from raw material to finished product.

Certification process

To participate in the RHP quality scheme, companies must first register with the RHP foundation. Once the general admission requirements have been met, Kiwa can schedule the certification audit. The certification process consists of:

  • Assessment of production processes and quality management
  • Verification of raw materials and composition
  • Verification of traceability and documentation
  • Inspection of facilities and working methods

Control and assurance

RHP certification is based on continuous quality assurance. Companies are periodically audited by independent bodies. Audits may be both scheduled and unscheduled and focus on:

  • Process control and quality management
  • Product testing and sampling
  • Compliance with RHP criteria
  • Administrative verification
