KAT Certification (egg traceability)

What is KAT?
KAT was developed by KAT ((Verein für kontrollierte alternative Tierhaltungsformen e.V.) and focuses on full transparency of egg origin. The core of the system is that eggs can be traced at any point in the supply chain back to the laying farm of origin. This traceability is secured through a central database in which all relevant chain data is recorded. KAT is widely applied within the German market and is particularly relevant for companies exporting to Germany.
Chain approach within KAT
KAT follows an integrated chain approach. This means that all relevant links in the supply chain must comply with the requirements, including:
- Layer farms
- Packing stations
- Trade and distribution
- Processing industry
This chain-wide approach ensures not only traceability, but also consistent quality and food safety.
Key requirements within KAT
The KAT scheme sets requirements at multiple levels within the supply chain. The focus includes:
- Full traceability of eggs through coding and registration
- Central recording of chain data in a database
- Strict separation of product flows
- Administrative control and documentation
- Hygiene and food safety
- Requirements for housing systems and animal welfare
Companies must demonstrably comply with these requirements to obtain and maintain certification.
Certification by Kiwa
Kiwa VERIN conducts independent audits to assess whether your organisation complies with KAT requirements. The audit consists of:
- A physical inspection of the site, including barns and ante-rooms
- Verification of processes and product flows
- An administrative review of records and traceability
This ensures that eggs are safe for consumption and fully traceable throughout the supply chain.
Access to the German market
For many companies, KAT certification is a prerequisite for supplying eggs to German buyers and retailers. The scheme therefore acts as a key gateway to the German market.
Combined audits and efficiency
Kiwa organizes audits as efficiently as possible. Where feasible, we perform combined audits, assessing multiple quality schemes during a single visit. This reduces audit burden and increases operational efficiency. Common combinations include:
- IKB
- VLOG
- Better Life Label (BLk)
Applying for KAT
If you wish to participate in KAT, you must apply via the KAT organization. During the application process, you can indicate that you want certification to be carried out by Kiwa VERIN. After registration, Kiwa can schedule the audit.
Why Kiwa VERIN?
Kiwa VERIN is an independent certification body with extensive experience in the egg supply chain and international quality schemes. We combine technical expertise with efficient audit processes, enabling you to demonstrate compliance with KAT requirements and access the German market.
Certification VLOG
VLOG is a German quality scheme that guarantees that food products and animal feed are produced without the use of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Kiwa provides independent VLOG certification in the Netherlands for poultry farms, livestock farms, feed producers, traders, packing stations and processing companies.
Certification Better Life (Beter Leven) quality label
With the Better Life (Dutch: Beter Leven) label you demonstrate that animal welfare is structurally embedded in your business operations. The label provides transparency on animal welfare through a star rating system (1, 2 or 3 stars), where more stars indicate higher animal welfare requirements.
