ESG Audits & Certification: Independently Assessed, Credibly Verified
Receive a quote tailored to your needs
How are ESG audits, certification, and corporate sustainability related? For ESG assessments to be trustworthy, the audit must be conducted by an independent, accredited body which is not by the company being audited itself, nor by a consulting firm that also sells recommendations for improvement.
What is an ESG audit?
An ESG audit is a systematic, documented assessment that verifies a company's sustainability performance across three key dimensions: Environmental, Social, and Governance. Unlike an internal sustainability report, an ESG audit provides an independent evaluation conducted by Kiwa as an accredited third party.
The result: a reliable, externally verified document you can confidently present to investors, financial partners, clients, and regulatory authorities.
Kiwa's ESG Services at a Glance
Kiwa offers three complementary ESG audit services. Here is an overview of all three, so you can determine whether and in what combination they are right for you.
ESG Audit
01 / Audit
Kiwa conducts a structured audit of your ESG performance—based on internationally recognized standards. The audit includes a document review, on-site visits, and interviews with relevant departments.
What is audited
- Environmental metrics: emissions, energy, water, waste
- Social standards: Working conditions, diversity, supply chain
- Governance: Compliance systems, anti-corruption, transparency
- Sustainability goals and measures
What you receive
- Written audit report with assessment
- Strengths and weaknesses profile for each ESG dimension
- Recommendations for improvement
- Kiwa seal of approval (if minimum requirements are met)
ESG Rating Preparation
02 / Assessment
ESG ratings from agencies such as EcoVadis, MSCI, Sustainalytics, and CDP are becoming increasingly important for access to capital markets, supplier qualification, and investor due diligence. Kiwa provides targeted preparation for your company to meet these assessment requirements.
- Gap Analysis: Comparison of your current ESG data with the requirements of the relevant rating agency.
- Data Validation: Verification of ESG metrics for completeness and verifiability.
- Documentation Review: Review of policies, management systems, and reporting processes
- Result: A clear picture of where you stand and what you need to address before the rating
ESG Due Diligence
03 / Due Diligence
ESG due diligence has become an integral part of risk assessment in corporate transactions, investment decisions, and financing projects. Kiwa conducts independent ESG due diligence assessments for buyers, investors, and lenders.
- Assessment of target companies for ESG risks and opportunities
- Evaluation of compliance risks (LkSG, CSRD, taxonomy)
- Assessment of ESG maturity levels and potential for improvement
- Structured report for investors, M&A advisors, or banks
Industry-Specific ESG Certification
In addition to company-wide ESG audits, Kiwa offers accredited certifications for specific sectors in industries where international standards define ESG requirements in particularly concrete terms. These industry-specific standards complement the general ESG audit and are recognized by customers, investors, and building certifiers (DGNB, BREEAM, LEED).
Why ESG Audits are critical today?
Three regulatory developments are making independent ESG audits increasingly essential for companies of all sizes:
CSRD & ESRS: Reporting Requirements for 15,000+ German Companies
Starting in 2025/2026, the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will gradually require thousands of companies to provide detailed sustainability reporting in accordance with ESRS standards. A Kiwa ESG audit provides the verified data foundation and saves significant internal effort in data collection.
Investors & Capital Markets: ESG as a Prerequisite for Financing
Private equity firms, institutional investors, and banks are integrating ESG criteria into their investment and lending decisions. Today, an externally verified ESG rating or audit is often a prerequisite for financing, investments, and access to capital markets.
Tenders & Supply Chain: ESG as a Prerequisite for Participation
Public contracting authorities and large companies are increasingly requiring ESG certification from suppliers either directly in tender documents or under the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG). A Kiwa audit documents your compliance for buyers and contracting authorities.

Frequently asked questions about the ESG Audit
What distinguishes an ESG audit from a sustainability report?
A sustainability report is prepared by the company itself and presented in its own perspective. An ESG audit is an external, independent review of this information conducted by an accredited body such as Kiwa. It is this external review that lends credibility to the report in the eyes of investors and regulatory authorities.
Does a Kiwa audit help in preparing for external ratings (EcoVadis, MSCI, Sustainalytics)?
Yes. The Kiwa audit identifies gaps in your ESG data that would otherwise only become apparent during the rating process. Our results can be used directly as supporting documentation for external rating agencies. For targeted rating preparation, we also offer our ESG Rating Preparation service (see above).
How does an ESG audit differ from an ESG Supply Chain Audit?
The ESG audit described on this page focuses on assessing your own company (at the organizational level). The ESG supply chain audit evaluates your suppliers to determine whether they meet your ESG requirements and LkSG guidelines. These two services complement each other and can be combined.
How much does an ESG Audit cost at Kiwa?
The cost depends on the size of your company, the scope of the project, and the standard you choose. Request a custom quote; we’ll usually provide you an initial estimate within 48 hours.
